1. Introduction

GMCnet exists for the purpose of exchanging information and promoting discussion about the motorhomes manufactured by General Motors Corporation(GMC) from 1973 to 1978. Discussion about all aspects of the GMC Motorhome and the mutual interests of their owners is encouraged.

Please be aware that subscribing to an automated mailing list may result in large amounts of email. This is not a "chat room" and your account will continue to accumulate email when you are off-line. If you or your internet service provider cannot tolerate large volume email traffic, then you should consider subscibing to the digest version, which should only produce a few emails per day.

This list is based at gmcnet.org and currently operates using the Mailman mailing list manager. The Listmaster is .

2. History

GMCnet is a service of gmcmotorhome.com, which exists as a result of the encouragement received from members of the Toronado Mail List. During the Summer of 1997, members of the Toro List urged Patrick Flowers to write a FAQ for the GMC motorhomes. David Moninger of The IslandTime Web Site offered server space for the FAQ, and the project commenced. Once the FAQ was published, response from GMC owners and fans was overwhelming, prompting the more ambitious project, gmcmotorhome.com, to be launched. In September of 1997, the circle became complete with GMCnet coming online.

In August of 2004, Mailinglists.org ceased operations, the domain gmcnet.org was secured and a dedicated server was rented as a new home for GMCnet.

In August of 2008, due to continuing problems with the leased server, the high monthly costs and the need to be able to personally maintain the physical machine, the server was moved to the home office of Patrick Flowers.

3. Acknowledgements

I would like to thank the following for their support:

  • David Moninger of The IslandTime Web Site for his gracious donation of server space for the original GMC Motorhome FAQ and his continued mentoring in the art of HTML programming.
  • Zachary Zehnacker for dutifully scanning GMC Motorhome floorplans for the FAQ.
  • Mike Frederick of Edison3, Inc., Greg Kalkhoff(aka "Sparky"), Doug Kitchener and all the other members of the "Toro" List for their encouragement.
  • My wife, Sharon, for putting up with yet another bone-headed idea.
  • The community of GMC motorhome owners and GMCnetters, whose continuing support make all this possible and without whose participation all this would be meaningless.

4. Membership Policy

GMCnet is an open subscription list. No qualification is required to join, nor is ownership of a GMC motorhome a prerequisite. The only requirement is a genuine interest in GMC motorhomes.

Subscribers whose GMCnet email begins "bouncing" due to mailbox size limitations or other internet service provider problems will be removed from the list until these problems are resolved.

Terms of service. By subscribing to GMCnet, you expressly agree to abide by these guidelines and acknowledge that failure to do so will result in your removal from the list. In addition, you agree that the list is administered under the sole discretion of the Listmaster and Board of Directors, whose decisions are final.

5. Discussion Guidelines

To post a message to the list, send your email addressed to . Do not send administrative or subscribe/unsubscribe requests to this address. These should either be directed to the if you are unable to accomplish them as outlined in Section 6, below.

All postings should be GMC motorhome-related in some way. Net etiquette is strongly encouraged at all times and the list is intended to be self- managing. Postings are unmoderated and therefore the list requires members to be responsible and courteous in what they post.

The following are specific violations of these guidelines:

  • Flaming or attempts to publicly embarrass another list subscriber. All posts should be composed with the same tone that you would use when speaking to someone within arm's length of your nose.
  • Political or religious commentaries or discussions. Only when there is a specific legislative bill or regulatory NPRM directly related to ownership of GMC motorhomes will political discussions be tolerated.
  • Inflammatory rhetoric. This list is intended to be a reasonable exchange of ideas and information. Statements such as "You'll kill your family" or "You'll be sued" tend to only inflame egos and reduce discussion to the level of childish arguement.
  • Professional opinions. While many members of GMCnet are degreed engineers or similar professionals and may be tempted to offer their "professional opinion", this is discouraged for several reasons. First, the word "engineer" has a special meaning in many jurisdictions. In some states, it's illegal to call yourself an engineer unless you hold a Professional Engineer designation and are specifically qualified in the area you're commenting on. Second, claiming special knowledge may well put you at risk of legal action - if you make claims that a product doesn't appear safe, this may result in the manufacturer sueing you for injury due to lost sales. Third, should you choose to express your "professional opinion" on GMCnet, you may expect to be challenged to provide not only data to back up your opinion, but also information as to your specific qualifications.
  • Excessively commercial posts. Since GMC motorhomes are orphan vehicles and owners largely depend on "cottage industry" for support, limited commercial posts are allowed. Also, individual subscribers may occasionally arrange "group buys" in order to get discounts on purchases. The subscriber that arranges the purchase is allowed to build a reasonable profit for his time and trouble into the price - he is, after all, in competition with the open market. If you disagree with this premise, then you are free not to participate in that particular group purchase. All emails regarding purchases should be between the individuals involved and should not be sent through GMCnet.
  • Profanity. This is a public discussion forum and profanity has no place in polite conversation.
  • Personal "Off List Attacks". Email sent directly to another GMCnetter containing personal attacks for views expressed on the list.
  • Personal discussions. If a subject is of interest to only the parties involved, then it should be moved "off list" using direct email.
Questions regarding the appropriateness of a any post should be directed to the .

Violations of these guidelines will result in private warnings to the offending party. Continued violations after these warnings will result in the party being removed from the list. Any instance of overt mailbombing shall result in immediate removal from the list. All such actions shall be solely at the discretion of the Listmaster and Directors.

List Filters

The list server is configured to reject certain message types. These messages will "bounced" and be returned to the sender. These message types are as follows:

  • Non-member submissions. GMCnet is a "closed posting" list, meaning that you must be subscribed in order to post. The list server checks the email "From" header against the subscriber list, rejecting any emails for which it doesn't find a match. It is imperative for subscribers with multiple email accounts to be sure their "From" headers match their subscribed address.
  • Emails with more than 4 recipients. This is both a spam prevention measure and reduces the potential for "mass mailings" from individuals also.
  • Posts over 15,000 bytes. This is an arbitrary limit mainly intended to prevent digest subscribers from sending the entire digest back to the list. Long posts should be edited judiciously. Most email software quotes the entire email being replied to. Subscribers are encouraged to "trim their quotes" by editing out all quoted material not directly relating to their reply.
  • Messages with attachments. Since GMCnet is a "text" medium, binary attachments are not permitted. This also helps prevent the spread of computer viruses and problems with size limited email accounts. Notice of availability of such files should instead be posted if distribution is desired, and mailings can be made privately to interested individuals. Several GMCnetters have web sites devoted to GMC motorhomes and will provide space to make these files available for download via FTP or the Web. Unfortunately, this also prevents "forwarding" messages using email software that forwards by attachment. If you're uncertain how your email client works, always use "Reply".
  • HTML encoded or "Rich Text" formated messages. Originally internet email was designed as a "plain text" medium, but recently many software companies have begun producing email clients with text formatting capability. Unfortunately these programs work by sending multiple copies of the same message - one of which contains the formatting tags. This is an unnecessary waste of bandwidth and litters the digest and archives with illegible garbage - therefore all posts to GMCnet must be in "plain text" format.

NOTE: HTML encoded or "Rich Text" is now the default message format for many email programs, including MicroSoft Outlook Express, which is included with the Windows operating system. You must reconfigure these programs to use "plain text" before posting to GMCnet.

Microsoft Outlook Express Users - To turn off "Rich Text", set up an address book entry for . In the address book window, there should be a check box titled "Always send in Rich Text". This box should be left unchecked. If the box is titled "Always send in Plain Text", then it should be checked.

AOL Users - It is very difficult to send "plain text" email in AOL's email client. We cannot provide support for AOL's software, but the following is reported to work in AOL 9.0:
    1. open the Write page,
    2. Right click on the space for typing, a box opens,
    3. left click on "Compose as Plain Text", the box closes,
    4. compose the message and
    5. click Send

Generally several days grace will be provided unless the volume of bounces becomes unmanageable. Please contact the Listmaster ( ) if you require assistance.

The list server is an automated mailing list manager. It is software, therefore it only understands simple commands like 'subscribe' and 'help'. If you need to interact with a human, send email to .
